Why your birth time matters more than your birth date
The ascendant moves a whole sign every two hours. Almost everything else in the chart is arranged around it.
The ascendant, or lagna, is the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. The Earth turns once a day, so the whole zodiac passes that horizon in twenty-four hours — which means a new sign rises roughly every two hours.
That is the single most time-sensitive value in the chart, and the houses are numbered from it. Move the ascendant by one sign and every house moves with it: the planet that was in your tenth house of career is now in the ninth, the ruler of your seventh house of marriage is a different planet entirely, and most of the reading changes.
What a wrong hour actually costs
| Error in birth time | What changes |
|---|---|
| A few minutes | Usually nothing, unless you were born near a sign boundary |
| One hour | Dasha boundaries shift by months; the ascendant degree moves about 15° |
| Two hours | The ascendant changes sign, and every house with it |
| Half a day | The Moon may change nakshatra, which resets the entire dasha timeline |
A time is not an instant until you resolve it
Even a correct clock reading is not yet a moment in time. You need the offset that was in force at that place on that date, and offsets have histories. Before 1906 much of India kept Madras Mean Time at +05:21:10 rather than +05:30. Between 1942 and 1945 the country ran an hour ahead on +06:30.
Get that wrong and you have shifted the birth by up to an hour before any astrology has happened. This is why the chart page shows you the whole chain — wall clock, zone, UTC instant, Julian day — rather than just accepting what you typed.
If you genuinely do not know
Say so rather than guessing. A chart cast for an assumed noon is a real chart of a moment that is not yours, and it will read with exactly as much confidence as a correct one. The parts that do not depend on the ascendant — your Moon sign, your nakshatra if the birth was not near a boundary, your numerology — are still worth having.
